Listening to the “Sundari”

Santanu and Milan went over to listen – but no, gentlemen – they haven’t lost their characters. This “Sundari” was non-human and was of the instrument type! It’s a close relative to shehnai, only narrower and shorter.

The number of established Indian classical musicians who currently perform with this instrument can probably be counted on one finger! And one of this very rare breed is Sri Bhimanna Jadhav, whom these two Denners were lucky to have the chance to listen to. He was accompanied on the tabla by Sri Apurba Mukherjee. Raag Shuddh Kalyan and raag Chandrokosh was played by Jadhavji.

The program was held at the ITC Sangeet Research Academy auditorium in Calcutta on the evening of 1st August 2012.
