An evening of vocal recital by Girish Chatterjee

Last evening saw an impressive performance by Girish Chatterjee at the Kalakunj (secondary auditorium of Kalamandir), organized by Holy Home in association with Taan Sur Sangeet Vidyalaya. His performance was a tribute to his guru, Pandit Bhimsen Joshi.

Girishji started his recital with raag Yaman (video clip), followed by a magnificent rendition of raag Kalavati (video clip) on request from “Denner” Milan from the audience.

Next was the bhajanJo Bhaje Hari Ko Sada“, made immortal by Pandit Bhimsen Joshi. He concluded the ceremony with the popular tune “Mile Sur Mera Tumhara” at requests of some of the listeners.

In his accompaniment with tabla, Ashish Chatterjee was smooth and blended well with the vocals throughout the performance.

We thank Girishji for treating us with a superb performance and sincerely wish that he continues to visit this city more often.

Sitar recital by Nishat Khan this evening

In a program organized by Sangeet Ashram and Young Leaders Forum at the G D Birla Sabhaghar this evening, Nishat Khan performed a solo recital of sitar with Sabir Khan accompanying him on tabla.

After an interactive session for about an hour on elaboration of his role as a Bollywood music director and fielding general questions from the audience – Nishat Khan played a wonderful rendition of Hameer – rarely heard these days.

Shorter but skilful raagas Nand and Shankara (another rarely heard) followed. Program ended with a tune composed by him for a Bengali song.

Detailed report/critique will be posted soon.
